‘Tropics’ (Heliconia psittacorum x spathocircinata) has to be one of my favourite heliconias… and the only psittacorum I grow in our garden. It’s well behaved with a tight, upright growth habit (all the other psittacorums, will spread and take over a garden bed or escape into lawns, to my knowledge). It’s an extremely vigorous grower, and I just love the colour of the bracts which remind me of a tropical sunset. If you’re trying to grow heliconias outside of the subtropics/tropics and overwinter them inside in pots, this one may be a good candidate due to its vigour #heliconia #heliconias #tropicalflowers 🌱🌺 Panama Hat Plant surprise! 😲 Gardening - and living in Australia - are totally incongruous with arachnophobia. 😂 have been growing this Malay Dwarf Green Coconut from a sprout about 7 or so years ago, and it’s finally starting to get some size… the nursery I bought it from said this is a particularly precocious variety and can fruit within 5 years, but maybe not in our subtropical climate! In any case, I love coconut palms - they scream ‘tropical resort’ or ‘I’m on holiday’ 😂🌴😎#coconut #tropicalplants #tropicalgarden Pandanus amaryllifolius AKA Pandan, growing really well in the warmth and humidity. I’ve heard it called ‘Asian Vanilla’ due to its presence in so many Asian desserts. The purple leaves are a Crinum Lily (Crinum asiaticum), which unlike Pandan, is poisonous if eaten. ☠️ #pandan #crinum #tropicalplants Having a chilled out Boxing Day and enjoying the garden colours 🌈 #caladium #palms #aglaonema I know it’s a bit late to be decorating, but better late than never, as they say! 😂 I really hope Santa brings me some plants this year! 🎅 Merry Christmas! 🌴🎄 #adonidiamerrillii #merrychristmas #tropicalplants Just had to snap this pic in the last bit of daylight for the day… our Blue Java banana with a gorgeous Brisbane sunset 😍 #tropicalsunset #bluejavabanana #brisbanesunset After some rather chilly summer Melbourne weather, we’ve come back to Brisbane’s rather tropical weather - and the garden is pumping #tropicalgarden #beehiveginger #brisbanegardens
